Shankar planning Velpari with Vikram and Ranveer?

on Jan 29, 2026

Director Shankar Shanmugh is renwoned in Indian Cinema has the man who brought new technology and grandeur on Hollywood scale to Indian Cinema. His films like Indian, Anniyan, Mudhalvan, Gentleman, Shivaji, Enthiran have became Pan-India hits when such a word is not coined. While Hindi market did not open up like Baahubali for any of his films, satellite presentation has made him a household name.

His I, 2.0 released with hype while the later was seen as biggest competition to Baahubali from Tamil Cinema. But both under performed and the director wanted to bring back Indian and announced Indian 2 but an accident on sets, Covid delays also pushed it back. In the meanwhile, Gamechanger took off and both became disasters.

While 1 and 2.0 at least ended up just as cost failures with moderate success, later two have become outright disasters showcasing a huge downfall for the director who for 2 decades till 2010 had been on a success streak like no one else till his time. Now, SS Rajamouli has similar history with each film going bigger than before.

Well, he is currently in discussions with Pen Media or Pen Studios for his next film, Velpari novel inspired period drama about a Tamil tribal King. The real King inspired story is going to be another Ponniyan Selvan level film from Tamil Cinema, say reports.

Shankar is planning to cast Vikram and Ranveer Singh in the film, say sources. He has been asked to strictly give a production budget and stick to his word on written paper during execution. The director is doubly confident about the film and learnt from his previous failures state reports. Let's wait and watch.
